Coffee with sugar?

By Laia RiCa, Berlin
Co-production with GFP München/wunder. Internationales Figurentheaterfestival.

Kaffee mit Zucker? (Coffee with sugar?) is material performance and biographical as well as contemporary documentary theatre, all at once. The two materials coffee and sugar claim the stage in many different states of matter. From this point of departure, German immigration stories to Central America and their colonial continuities are examined. Performer Laia RiCa grew up in El Salvador and Germany. She introduces these biographical experiences into the work: struggling with two worlds, constantly being suspected of betraying one’s “roots” and questioning feelings of inferiority and superiority. Coffee beans and cotton candy, biographical material and historical sources, video fragments and live music are used to create powerful imagery in this concentrated and sensual production.

“Stories overlap and collide on various projection surfaces. This montage of devices and materials touches our senses and moves our minds. The intense show has a rhythm all of its own, created by the permanent change of devices. This is technically excellent and continues to resonate long after the show is over.”
From the jury statement of the FRITZ WORTELMANN PREIS
